For 2014 I have been commissioned to write a book for publishers Pen and Sword Books, who are developing a social history imprint to add to their well-known list of military history books. With a working title of Shell Shocked Britain it will look at the legacy for mental health of the Great War and the period immediately after it. Framed by the story of a great uncle who, 1922, murdered his ex-girlfriend and turned the razor he used to cut her throat on himself, it will examine what impact the war and the early 1920s had on our understanding of mental illness and look at the ways in which the nation coped with the emotional aftermath of the war.
